Op-Ed: Maryam Monsef’s Success Belongs Both to Afghans & Canadians

Maryan Monsef Candian Minister

Op-Ed by: Farkhunda Zahra Naderi

I am pleased that within a month, Maryam Monsef has successfully, not only surprised Afghans, but Canadians as well and indeed she thoroughly deserves it!

I am sure that the fact that Maryam Monsef was trusted by her constituency to become a MP, and by her political party to go beyond that achievement and be elected as a Minister was because:As a Canadian citizen she was both active and talented, and she was qualified in terms of her skills, experience and education. I also believe that the significance of being an Afghan was also an encouraging factor that enhanced her qualifications. Therefore, I am personally truly thankful to the Canadian people, and especially to the Liberal Political Political Party for respecting her strenuous journey as an Afghan refugee to Canada, where her efforts, hard work, talent and willingness, for brining a positive change in Canada were strengthened by their political support.

On a global basis Maryam Monsef’s presence in Canadian Politics represents all the refugees, but in particular she represents Afghanistan. For some, to those outside of Canada she is merely a Canadian but within the country, she will always be an Afghan Canadian.

Maryam Monsef, with her priviliged Canadian identity will always represent the talent and tireless work of all Afghan girls. She is the principal lobbyist for Afghanistan’s support, not only in Canada, but worldwide.

Maryam Monsef is not detached from Afghanistan. Let us not forget that she bore the sorrow of losing her father, the shock of war and the images of her destroyed home at the age of 11 from Afghanistan to Canada. Therefore, she knows what the impact of war is better than any other Canadian, through her Afghan roots. Thus, through her Canadian knowledge and Afghani experience, she understands the importance of the development of the democratic institutions to attain a better human community. Therefore, I am very optimistic that she will be successful in the chosen ministry.

Afghan people, especially Afghan women living inside Afghanistan, must not forget that Maryam Monsef whilst in Canada, did not remain an Afghan only by reason of her birth place, and by her past 11 years experience of war in Afghanistan, but by her continuous efforts and dedication to continually supporting Afghan women from Canada, is evidence of her fight for a better Afghanistan! She defined her success in Canada by her passionate efforts to support Afghan girls.

In spite of the fact that various challenges try to occupy our time on a daily basis in Afghanistan, yet, as an Afghan women politician, I can feel somewhat awkward in remaining indifferent, and not to celebrate Maryam Monsef’s political success from afar, in some lines of my writings here in my personal page, where I know with the Canadian structure of politics and their boundaries, that she is representing Afghans in Canada and that she has been supporting Afghanistan throughout her active life.

Maryam deserves recognition, love and respect, from her native land, where she was forced by the onset of war, to abandon her home and become a refugee. Maryam is a supreme lobbying image, not only for vulnerable Afghan women, but for Afghanistan in general, alongside her Canadian responsibilities.

I believe that all Afghans either in Afghanistan or in any other part of the world, should be proud of her achievements, and look forward to her further support in Afghanistan during this time, where Afghans voices are silent.

Pakistani father arrested over planned sell of 12 yd daughter for prostitution

Posted: 06 Nov 2015 11:19 PM PST

NushinPolice in Pakistan have arrested a man for arranging to sell his 12-year-old daughter into prostitution in a case that highlights the dramatic abuses inflicted on women and children in some segments of society, reports Radio Liberty 'Radio Azadi'.

Azadi Radio interviews with the intended victim, Nushin, and her brother saying that Adalat Khan, from Pakistan’s tribally dominated northwestern region, has already profited from the sale of at least two other daughters and their mother into lives of servitude or worse.

“I already lost my mother and two sisters,” Nushin, shakily fighting to hold back tears, says in interview. “Now he tried to sell me to two Punjabi men. I don’t know what they would have done with me.” She is now under police protection.

The intended victim's 18-year-old brother, Rezwanullah, says that Nushin shared her suspicions with him and he informed police about it.

“My sister informed me that my father was going to sell her,” Rezwanullah says, “so I took her away and we ran away to our aunt’s house.”

Rezwanullah says he was very young at the time his mother and two sisters were sold, adding that he has little recollection of them and does not know their whereabouts.

Payoffs have purportedly ranged from a few hundred dollars to a foreign visa and, in this latest case, 200,000 rupees ($1,900), roughly equal to a manual laborer’s annual wage.

According to the report, the girl's father who is in custody acknowledges handing over two of his daughters in the past but insists that he merely hoped to give away Nushin in the “name of God.”

Police have said that Nushin's father was arrested during a raid from his home in Sar Dheri village, close to Peshawar, on October 16 who had agreed, via a broker, to sell Nushin for 200,000 rupees to two men from Punjab Province.

Nushin's father has been charged with arranging the sale and the two buyers and the buyers with trying to buy a minor girl for prostitution.

If court finds them guilty, each of them could face up to 25 years in prison.

IOMInternational Organization for Migration (IOM) distributed vital relief supplies across northern, central and eastern Afghanistan this week, helping families affected by a 7.5 magnitude earthquake that struck on 26 October.

Assessment conducted by government, IOM, UN and other NGOs shows an estimated 8,300 families in 14 Afghan provinces were affected by the earthquake. More than 100 people lost lives and around 500 others sustained injuries.

According to a report published by IOM on Saturday, the toll could rise further as remote communities are accessed by assessment teams.

The report further states that the organization distributed relief items to approximately 1,000 families in Badakhshan, Nangarhar, Kunar, Laghman and Takhar provinces, and distributions are ongoing for additional assessed families in these provinces.

"With the majority of assessments completed, getting aid to families in need is our priority," said IOM Afghanistan Chief of Mission Richard Danziger.

Assessments have been completed in 98 districts out of the 117 estimated to have been affected. To date, roughly 17,000 families have been verified.

Access in some of the affected areas remains a challenge due to difficult terrain and security concerns and IOM is coordinating with local partners to ensure that aid reaches affected communities.

Nangarhar, Kunar and Nooristan, are the other provinces hard-hit by the earthquake besides Badakhshan, the epicenter of it.
