Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi lost his reelection bid last night in California. Mirkarimi spent "months in the national spotlight as the face of his city's controversial 'sanctuary city' policy on illegal immigration."

Mirkarimi, 54, was defeated by Vicki Hennessy, a former sheriff's official who had the endorsement of San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee and the sheriff deputies association. With 42 percent of precincts reporting, Henessy had received 63 percent of the vote to 31 percent for Mirkarimi.

The defeated sheriff had been heavily criticized after an illegal immigrant from Mexico shot and killed Katie Steinle on San Francisco's waterfront. "Sanchez had been released from Mirkarimi's jail in March even though federal immigration officials had requested that he be detained for possible deportation."

An East Chicago councilman charged with murder has been re-elected.

The (Munster) Times reports that 42-year-old Robert Battle ran unopposed in Tuesday's election. He is accused of shooting Reimundo Camarillo Jr. to death on Oct. 12 in East Chicago. He also faces a federal drug charge after police say they found more than 73 pounds of marijuana and more than $100,000 cash during a Porter County traffic stop.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich said Battle did not request an absentee ballot to vote from the jail.

Battle is seeking bail and a Nov. 17 hearing is planned. On Tuesday a Lake County judge granted prosecutors' request for a DNA mouth swab from Battle.

American taxpayers are on the hook for a $43 million gas station constructed in Afghanistan -- a price tag that's about $42.5 million higher than it should've been, and the Department of Defense can't explain why, according to a new government report.

The SIGAR report details the planning and construction of a compressed natural gas (CNG) station in the Afghan city of Sheberghan, part of a larger Downstream Gas Utilization Project designed to take advantage of Afghanistan's natural gas reserves. The gas station itself was meant to prove that CNG stations were a viable alternative to imported petroleum for Afghan vehicles.

Looking for another nonlethal way to take down suspects, the Anderson Police Department decided to go the way of the dragon.

The police force in the Northern California town of about 10,000 people plans to equip its 20 officers with nunchakus, also known as nunchucks.

Basically, they're what martial arts legend Bruce Lee used – besides his fists of fury and feet -- to take down all those bad guys in his movies.

The police department was looking for a versatile tool that would limit injuries to officers and the people they detained – but that would still be an effective means of subduing an unruly suspect. Anderson's top brass decided nunchakus were the way to go, said Sgt. Casey Day.

"It gives us the ability to control a suspect instead of striking them," he said.

Of course, if you've watched enough Lee movies you'll notice that he didn't use nunchakus to pacify his enemies. He beat them up with them. But Anderson police insist they can detain someone with them in a relatively peaceful way.

In his push to overhaul the American justice system, President Obama has requested that former prisoners not be asked about their criminal histories when applying for a job. However, responsible gun owners are still expected to undergo a background check before purchasing a new firearm because Obama believes in fairness.

According to an NBC News report, the president has asked Congress to "ban the box" which is described as "shorthand for prohibiting the government and its contractors from asking job applicants about criminal histories on applications."
