HSBC: Global trade down 8.4% and global GDP down 3.4%..we are already in a global recession Posted: 22 Oct 2015 04:04 PM PDT http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2015-10-13/metric-we-are-already-global-recession-hsbc-warns One of the things you might have noticed if you follow trends in global growth and trade, is that the entire world seems to be decelerating in tandem with China's hard landing (which most recently manifested itself in another negative imports print). For evidence of this, one might look to the WTO, whose chief economist Robert Koopman recently opined that "it's almost like the timing belt on the global growth engine is a bit off or the cylinders are not firing." And then there's the OECD, which recently slashed its global growth forecasts. The ADB joined the party as well, citing China, soft commodity prices, and a strong dollar on the way to cutting its regional outlook. Even Citi has jumped on the bandwagon with Willem Buiter calling for better than even odds of a worldwide downturn. Indeed, virtually anyone you talk to will tell you that the world looks to have entered a new era post-crisis that's defined by a less robust global economy. Those paying attention will also tell you that this dynamic may well end up being structural and endemic rather than transitory. Earlier today, we noted that Credit Suisse's latest global wealth outlook shows that dollar strength led to the first decline in total global wealth (which fell by $12.4 trillion to $250.1 trillion) since 2007-2008. Interestingly, a new chart from HSBC shows that when you combine the concepts outlined above, you learn that when denominated in USD, the world is already in an output recession. Some color from HSBC: We are already in a global USD recession Global trade is also declining at an alarming pace. According to the latest data available in June the year on year change is -8.4%. To find periods of equivalent declines we only really find recessionary periods. This is an interesting point. On one metric we are already in a recession. As can be seen in Chart 3 on the following page, global GDP expressed in US dollars is already negative to the tune of USD1,37trn or -3.4%. That is, we are already in a dollar recession. We arrived at these numbers by converting global GDP into USD terms and then looking at the change in GDP. True, this highlights to a large extent the impact of a stronger dollar – which may be unfair, but the US dollar is still the world's reference currency. However, it highlights that from a US perspective the global growth outlook is rather challenging. Italsohighlightshow damaging a very strong dollar can be for global growth. In particular it highlights the limited effect of global QE efforts. Over the last year, the ECB and BoJ have added about USD850bn to their reserves. The relative increase in ECB and BoJ stimulus may have exaggerated the decline in global growth due to the shift in exchange rates. However, these lower exchange rates have so far not produced sufficiently large export growth numbers to offset the wider growth story. Also, it illustrates that the EM implication of global USD growth is only marginally negative despite significant declines in real exchange rates. The key takeaway here though as far as we are concerned is that QE policies have not generated more value than they have destroyed. It is also worth noting that this dollar recession is worse than the 2001 recession by some margin. So amusingly, the US got everyone on the money printing bandwagon, none of it had the intended effect of giving the lackluster post-crisis “recovery” the defibrillator shock it needed, and because the rest of the world is now still in easing mode, there’s a policy divergence that’s contributing to dollar strength which is in turn serving as a drag on the same global economy all of the easing failed to boost. This is the same dollar strenth, by the way, that threatens to send EM into an outright crisis and which has the Fed so boxed in that they literally just froze last month. Once again, thank you Ben Bernanke, for being courageous enough to send us down this path. ———- you wont get a warning bell..it will just be here..and it is.. “Indeed, virtually anyone you talk to will tell you that the world looks to have entered a new era post-crisis that's defined by a less robust global economy. Those paying attention will also tell you that this dynamic may well end up being structural and endemic rather than transitory.” the numbers tell the story..a look at the BDI might be pertinent to.. 401 Filed under: China, Europe, Japan, UK, USA, World Finances, World News ![]() |
What’s behind the escalating violence in Israel? Posted: 22 Oct 2015 03:49 PM PDT http://www.wbal.com/article/125183/112/whats-behind-escalating-violence-in-israel A string of deadly, pointed attacks throughout Israel has caused local and international fears of escalating tensions in the region. After some stabbings and attacks on culturally significant sites, the violence reached a new level this weekend. Here is an explanation of why the violence started, and how it’s spread. What Happened This Weekend? On Sunday, a Bedouin man who was an Israeli citizen allegedly opened fire inside the central bus station in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba. The alleged attacker, identified on Monday as Muhanad Al-Aqabi, 21, was armed with a gun and a knife when he fatally shot an Israeli soldier at the station, officials said. He allegedly proceeded to take the soldier’s M-16 but was quickly shot dead by Israeli security forces on scene. In addition to the alleged gunman and the soldier, identified as 19-year-old Sgt. Omri Levy, six other Israelis were also injured as an Eritrean was shot by an Israeli security guard who reportedly believed the African was a second assailant. In cellphone videos from the bus station, a lynch mob descends on the Eritrean after he was shot, lying on the ground. Bystanders kick him, throw a bench at him and pin him to the ground with a chair as he bleeds profusely. The mob blocked paramedics from evacuating the Eritrean, according to eyewitnesses, chanting “Death to Arabs,” “Arabs out!” and “Am Israel Hai” (“The people of Israel still live”). A hospital spokeswoman confirmed to The Associated Press that the Eritrean man, identified as Habtom Zarhum, 29, was an asylum seeker who died from his injuries, bringing the total number of fatalities from the incident to three people. Apart from the Beersheba attack, Israeli police say three Israelis were wounded in six stabbing attacks over the weekend. All six alleged Palestinian assailants were shot dead, including two in Jerusalem. On Friday, a Palestinian man, wearing a "press" T-shirt and purportedly posing as a photographer, allegedly stabbed and wounded an Israeli soldier near the West Bank city of Hebron. What Happened in the Other Recent Clashes? There have been daily clashes in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, across the West Bank and on the Gaza border in recent days, with tires being burned, rocks thrown and Israeli forces responding with tear gas, rubber bullets and live ammunition. The Palestinian Red Crescent says nearly 2,000 Palestinians have been injured since the beginning of the month. How Did This Spate of Violence Start? Palestinians point to the settler arson attack back in July that killed three people, including a toddler. And Israelis contend it escalated when Palestinians shot dead two settlers at close range in front of their children Oct. 1. But Palestinians say Israeli settlement construction continues in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, and frustration among the younger generation of Palestinians has reached a breaking point. The existing frustration has been fueled by ongoing and intensifying confrontations around the al-Aqsa mosque and the Temple Mount. A key national symbol for Palestinians, it is Islam's third holiest shrine and the most sacred site in Judaism. Palestinians fear increasing visits by Jewish groups, and continued restrictions on Muslim access, will erode Muslim religious control there. But Israel has adamantly denied the allegations, saying there are no plans to change the status quo and accuses the Palestinians of incitement by spreading the rumors. Since the beginning of the month, at least nine Israelis have been killed, along with 41 Palestinians, 20 of whom Israeli authorities have identified as attackers. The remaining 21 Palestinians died in clashes with Israeli troops. The final fatality was the Eritrean man who died during the bus station attack. Is This The Third Intifada? Not quite. The violence has been dominated by Palestinian teenagers stabbing Israelis in so-called “lone wolf” attacks and without the political and organizational support that existed during the first and second intifadas. Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu said on Monday, “we are in an extended struggle that we will surely win.” Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas condemned a recent arson attack on Joseph’s Tomb, revered by some Jews. For their part, Hamas and Islamic Jihad have welcomed the attacks, saying Sunday’s attack in Beersheba was the “natural response to the cold-blooded executions of Palestinians by the IDF and the settlers.” What Is Being Done to Stop the Violence? Israeli Police Superintendent Micky Rosenfeld has bolstered the city’s police force, and the cabinet approved an additional 300 soldiers to be placed under police command. Rosenfeld told ABC News there are security officers every 20, 40 and 60 yards throughout the Old City of Jerusalem; a noticeable increase in an already heavily policed city. A makeshift wall has been erected in the East Jerusalem Palestinian neighborhood of Jabel Mukaber, adding to the roadblocks that already ring it. The six concrete sections stand as a damaging, controversial symbol and a de facto division in the heart of Jerusalem. Army checkpoints with huge cement blocks have gone up throughout East Jerusalem, and going into the Old City, Palestinians are frequently stopped and frisked by Israeli police. Palestinians living in East Jerusalem and the West Bank say the tighter control, the walls and the checkpoints will do nothing to quell the anger. What’s the U.S. Doing About It? Secretary of State John Kerry is about to get more involved. A senior State Department official confirmed to ABC News that Kerry will meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu Thursday in Germany and Palestinian President Abbas Saturday in Jordan. As of Monday, however, Israeli officials worried Netanyahu may have to cancel his trip to Germany for the second time in as many weeks. A senior official in the Netanyahu government says the Israeli prime minister will not offer any concessions to the Palestinians during his scheduled meeting in Berlin later this week with Kerry. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-middle-east-34580531 UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called for fast action to halt the “dangerous escalation in violence” between Israelis and Palestinians. He told reporters in Jerusalem it was not too late to avoid a broader crisis. Mr Ban spoke soon after police said a Palestinian drove his car into a group of Israelis in the occupied West Bank, injuring a soldier and a civilian. Eight Israelis and more than 40 Palestinians, including attackers, have been killed in recent weeks. The upsurge in violence began last month when tensions at a flashpoint holy site in Jerusalem revered by Jews and Muslims boiled over amid rumours that Israel planned to relax long-standing rules to strengthen Jewish rights at the complex. Israel has denied such claims. ———– thanks to intrigued for the link.. good article..as i have said before..stones dont really hurt anyone..and expect the israelis to use this for all its worth..the shooting and killing of teens is first class butchery..and the media ignore it completely.. “Palestinians point to the settler arson attack back in July that killed three people, including a toddler. Russian President Vladimir Putin and Syrian President Bashar Assad held talks in Moscow on Tuesday Posted: 22 Oct 2015 03:45 PM PDT https://www.rt.com/news/319244-assad-putin-talks-moscow/ "Yesterday evening Syrian President Bashar Assad arrived in Moscow for a working visit," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Wednesday. "President [Putin] was informed in detail by his Syrian counterpart about the current state of affairs in Syria and the long-range plan." Vladimir Putin said that the Syrian people have been confronting terrorists "practically single-handedly" for years, withstanding considerable casualties. Lately, they have achieved serious and positive results in this fight, he added. The terrorists' attempts to destabilize the situation in the Middle East arouse deep concern in Russia because"unfortunately, people from the former Soviet republics, at least 4,000 of them, are fighting against the Syrian army," the Russian leader said. "Naturally, we cannot allow them to appear on Russian territory with all the combat experience and ideological brainwashing they have gone through." Syria is a country friendly to Russia, and Moscow is ready not only to assist with fighting terrorism, but also in reaching a peaceful political settlement to the Syrian conflict in cooperation with other global and regional powers, Putin said. "The decisive word, without any doubt, must belong solely to the Syrian people," Vladimir Putin stressed. Bashar Assad thanked Russia for the support provided to Syria in fighting for its sovereignty and unity. "Terrorists would have occupied far greater territories if it were not for Russia's military assistance," President Assad said, adding that political steps are due to follow military action. "The only aim for all of us should be what the Syrian people want as a future for their country." http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34595409 The White House has strongly condemned a visit to Moscow by Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. A spokesman criticised Russia for putting on a “red carpet welcome”. The Syrian leader’s trip on Tuesday came three weeks after Russia began air strikes in Syria against Islamic State militants and other forces. It was Mr Assad’s first overseas trip since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011. The conflict has claimed more than a quarter of a million lives. While in Moscow, Mr Assad made a point of expressing his gratitude for Russia’s military intervention in the conflict. He said Russia’s involvement had stopped “terrorism” becoming “more widespread and harmful” in Syria. For his part, Mr Putin said Moscow’s hope was that a “long-term resolution can be achieved on the basis of a political process with the participation of all political forces, ethnic and religious groups”. The BBC’s Steve Rosenberg in Moscow says that by hosting the Syrian leader, President Putin was sending a clear message to the West – that Moscow is a key player in the Middle East, and that there can be no solution to the Syrian conflict without Russia’s involvement. ———— this went down like a bacon sandwich at a bar mitzvah..your just going to have to deal with it NATO..they cant defeat assad..they are going to have to negotiate with him.. “Putin was sending a clear message to the West – that Moscow is a key player in the Middle East, and that there can be no solution to the Syrian conflict without Russia’s involvement.” 401 Filed under: Russia, Syria, USA, World News ![]() |
Posted: 22 Oct 2015 03:40 PM PDT Liberal senator Bill Heffernan has used parliamentary privilege to accuse an unnamed former prime minister of being an alleged paedophile, while also pointing the finger at the judiciary. Senator Heffernan has been campaigning for the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse to expand its investigation to include the court system. He told Senate estimates on Tuesday that he had given the commission “very disturbing” police documents that named at least 28 alleged paedophiles, some of whom are prominent Australians. But he said the commission had told him it could not investigate the cases because they were outside its terms of reference. “We have in Australia, sadly, a compromise at the highest of levels. There is a former prime minister on this list and it is a police document, ” he told senators. “It’s not so much the secret that’s the problem, it’s when a group of people, such as the 28 people on this page, keep each other’s secrets that the institution is compromised.” Senator Heffernan did not expand on the allegations or provide any further details, instead focusing on what he believed were the failings of the “the institution of the law”. “The treatment in the federal jurisdiction of children by some people in the Family Law Court is disgusting and a disgrace,” he said. Attorney-General George Brandis suggested the royal commission could look into the “grave matters” raised by the senator but said it was ultimately up to the commissioner to decide. “The royal commission has a process for dealing with complaints and other information brought to its attention and placed into its hands by citizens,” he said. “It is for the royal commission to judge whether, by reference to its terms of reference, that information is something that it should or indeed is capable of inquiring further into.” ———- thanks to charles frith for the link.. i didnt hear one word about this accusation on mainstream news..and thats damning to start with..but look what happens when he tries to get some transparency and investigations done: “He told Senate estimates on Tuesday that he had given the commission “very disturbing” police documents that named at least 28 alleged paedophiles, some of whom are prominent Australians.” but what happens: “But he said the commission had told him it could not investigate the cases because they were outside its terms of reference. We have in Australia, sadly, a compromise at the highest of levels. There is a former prime minister on this list and it is a police document, ” he told senators.” so the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse doesnt want to look at his information because its outside its terms of reference? bullshit..who is the PM? fair to say a lib wont dump on a lib so we are looking for an alp PM.. 401 Filed under: Australia, World News ![]() |

Stephen Hawking warns about the greatest threat to humanity and its not global warming Posted: 22 Oct 2015 03:31 PM PDT http://theantimedia.org/stephen-hawking-warns-about-the-greatest-threat-to-humanity/ Stephen Hawking has been outspoken in recent years about the catastrophic dangers humanity faces in the 21st century. He said we should be cautious in attempting to contact aliens, warning that advanced extraterrestrial life may not be friendly toward us and could destroy the human race. He also stated we should be cautious in creating strong artificial intelligence. The renowned physicist joined Tesla's Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and Google executive Demis Hassabis in signing a letter that warned against amilitary artificial intelligence arms race. Hawking even issued a warning to the scientists at the European Center for Nuclear Research (CERN) about the dangers of the Higgs Boson "God Particle," claiming it could initiate "catastrophic vacuum decay"— a quantum bubble that expands at the speed of light and wipes out the universe. Recently, Hawking addressed the threat he says may be more far more dangerous to the future of human civilization than robots, aliens, or quantum particles: capitalist greed. During a Reddit AMA, he argued that the future is wrought with the peril of rampant inequality expedited by an automated machine-based global economic system. "If machines produce everything we need, the outcome will depend on how things are distributed." Hawking continued, "Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution. So far, the trend seems to be toward the second option, with technology driving ever-increasing inequality." Predictably, a dramatic response thread followed. Many commenters agreed with Hawking and denounced the globalist oligarchy that is currently consolidating wealth at an unprecedented rate. Responses ranged from calls for a "bloody revolution" to references to the recent films Elysium, Wall-E, and Zeitgeist 2: Addendum. One commenter invoked the anarcho-syndicalist political views of linguist Noam Chomsky. The main theme of the discussion centered around the automation of labor and how that would affect the human workforce and the global economy. Hawking seems to believe that our current trajectory will make such automation a death knell for the working classes, with the bourgeoisie machine owners exerting total economic control over human civilization. One commenter strongly disagreed with Hawking, referencing recent Journal of Economic Perspective articles and claiming "technology has never, will never, and simply cannot result in structural unemployment." ———– thanks to nomad for the link.. “Hawking addressed the threat he says may be more far more dangerous to the future of human civilization than robots, aliens, or quantum particles: capitalist greed.” not climate change..its greed that will destroy us..hawko..your on the ball..finally.. “Everyone can enjoy a life of luxurious leisure if the machine-produced wealth is shared, or most people can end up miserably poor if the machine-owners successfully lobby against wealth redistribution.” right.. 401 Filed under: Climate Change, UK, USA, World News ![]() |
