Liberal plan was always to get majority government, says party's comms director Posted: 21 Oct 2015 06:50 PM PDT 'We had a plan going into this that we set in motion a little over two years ago and we stuck to it,' says Kate Purchase. Wed, 2015-10-21 21:48 Political insiders from all three major parties disclosed surprises and even secrets from the Oct. 19 general election Wednesday, including a revelation that the Liberals began laying ambitious plans two years ago with a goal of winning 170 House of Commons seats. Campaign communications director Kate Purchase disclosed the party exceeded its target by 14 seats after a final surge that vaulted the Liberals from a corner spot in the Commons to government. “We had a plan going into this that we set in motion a little over two years ago and we stuck to it,” Ms. Purchase said at a post-election panel in Ottawa.
With a majority mandate, Trudeau must respect voters and deliver 'real change' Posted: 21 Oct 2015 11:36 AM PDT Liberals will do well to remember to continue to respect Canadian voters, and if not, to recognize that just as easily as they were given a mandate to govern, that it could just as quickly be taken away, writes Matt Triemstra. Wed, 2015-10-21 14:23 On Tuesday Canadians woke up to a Liberal majority government. It wasn’t expected. No one predicted it. But the Liberals certainly earned it. After a long and gruelling campaign, the Liberals pulled off an upset that will go down in Canadian history books, the first party ever to climb from third place to secure a majority government. With 184 elected Members of Parliament, the Liberal Party now has a solid mandate to govern for the next four years.
‘You’re fired,’ Canadians tell Harper Posted: 21 Oct 2015 11:07 AM PDT It's been quite a while since Canadians have taken the opportunity to toss out a sitting prime minister with significant tenure. Wed, 2015-10-21 14:04 OTTAWA—Canadians have just pulled off their best impression of Donald Trump on The Apprentice, collectively telling Prime Minister Stephen Harper, “You’re fired.” It’s been quite a while since Canadians have taken the opportunity to toss out a sitting prime minister with significant tenure. Sure, Paul Martin lost in 2006, but he had only been prime minister a little more than two years. It’s also worth noting that he was being punished for the sponsorship scandal, which happened under the watch of his predecessor Liberal leader and prime minister Jean Chrétien. Harper’s loss, on the other hand, is all his to wear.
